Kristopher D. “Daniel” Greer had been a full-time firefighter in Ashland City, Tennessee. He joined the Marines to serve his family, friends, and country.

Greer was assigned to Company D, 4th Combat Engineering Battalion, 4th Marine Division, Marine Forces Reserve, out of Knoxville, TN.

On his first deployment after joining the Marines in April, 2006 he was promoted to corporal. He served with an Explosive Ordinance Disposal (EOD) team clearing improvised explosive devices—to make buildings, roads, and paths safe for fellow soldiers and the Afghan people.

As he did in his civilian life, Cpl. Greer risked his life for others on a daily basis, in what CBS News reporter Terry McCarthy referred to as “the most dangerous job in Afghanistan.”

Greer was killed in the line of duty in August 2010 after being struck with an improvised explosive device.

A fellow engineer from Company D, Corporal Benjamin R. Ledbetter, commented, “Being a firefighter in the civilian world, Cpl. Greer to us was already a hero.”
